Bungoma is one of the eight districts of western province. It borders
Mt Elgon district to the Northwest, Trans-Nzoia district to the North,
Kakamega district to the East and Southeast, Busia and Teso districts
to the West and Southwest. The district borders the republic of Uganda
to the North western point. The district lies between latitude 0 25o.3¡¯
North and 35o 04¡¯ East. It covers an area of
2069 square kilometers, which is about 25% of the total area of western
province.
The altitude ranges from 1200-1800 above sea level. Annual rainfall is
1200 -1800mm per annum. It has a population of one million people and
166,600 farm families. The mainstay of the local economy is
agriculture; these constitutes crop production as the major economic
activity followed by the livestock industry; where dairy, beef, pig and
poultry farming are practiced.
The population density of the district is 424
people per square kilometer. The population of the people of Bungoma
district according to the 1999 population census is estimated at
876,491 people and 701,323 households. Bungoma district is one of the
districts with many people below the poverty line. It¡¯s estimated that
the percentage of the poor in the district is 57% (GOK 2002). There¡¯s
need for interventions that would ensure that the local communities
access proven technologies, as this would aid in reducing the incidence
of poverty and its related ills. The local community is very hospitable
and is always ready to learn.
